The Third Plant-Based Chicken Breast Has Arrived—and I’m Praying It’s Here to Stay
Ozo’s chicken breast in 2021 was phenomenal but fleeting. Lightlife offered a reasonably good alternative, but it too, has vanished from shelves. Gardein’s version exists in the restaurant supply world, but for everyday consumers, it’s locked behind bulk membership pricing.
Enter: Swap’s Chicken Breast. And yes—cue the sigh of relief. You won’t be disappointed.

Faux Meat Evaluation
👀 Visual
The product arrives frozen in a plastic bag, reminiscent of bulk poultry packaging. The “cut” isn’t overly geometric—it’s imperfect in a way that mimics traditional chicken breast. I appreciate the effort to avoid the dreaded triangle.
🤲 Tactile
No stickiness, no slime. The cuts are flexible, natural-feeling, and pleasantly un-weird.
🔥 Cooking Performance
Instructions from the packaging:
- Thaw overnight in the fridge or for one hour in cold water
- Preheat pan on medium heat and add oil
- Season with salt and pepper
- Sear for 4 minutes per side
- Finish with sauce or seasoning
I followed the directions exactly. To my surprise, the exterior caramelized beautifully into a golden brown—no sticking, no fuss.
For comparison, I recreated my white wine caper vegan butter sauce from the Lightlife days. Swap’s held up—and then some.
👅 Taste & Texture
Spot on. It tastes like chicken. The chew, the mouthfeel, even the way it cuts—layered muscle fibers and all—are uncannily poultry-like. It absorbed the sauce beautifully. If you served this without context, I doubt anyone would guess it’s plant-based. No slimy residue, no odd aftertaste, no minerality or mushroom funk.

💬 Final Thoughts
At ~$8 per 3.5 oz breast, it’s still a premium item—made in France, no less. Hopefully, as distribution grows, the price will settle.
For everyday meals, strips and nuggets abound. But if you’re ready to flex your continental cuisine skills or host a plant-forward dinner party, Swap’s Chicken Breast is absolutely special-occasion worthy.
